A Gripping Journey: Food Delivery from the West Philippine Sea – A Gripping Journey Along Supply Lines in the China Standoff.

Director Baby Ruth Villarama and her team travel on a diverse assortment of sea craft to record the ongoing strife and its consequences between the Philippines and the People's Republic of China over sovereignty of the newly designated West Philippine Sea. This vast area, recognized by nearly everyone outside of China as within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, has seen escalating incursions by Chinese vessels. These include fishing boats, many are China's coast guard vessels that have engaged in harassing, rammed, and attempted to board Filipino boats as part of the broader sovereignty dispute.

Some footage are highly charged, but frequently the conflict unfolds as a war of words of seaborne intimidation. Personnel on opposing vessels broadcast lengthy speeches over short-wave, laden with diplomatic language, practicing a unique "airwave diplomacy".

Sustaining the Outposts

The documentary's name references the critical efforts by the Philippine army to deliver provisions to isolated garrisons in the West Philippine Sea where personnel are stationed for protracted periods of isolation. These "islands" are often little more than patches of sand in shallow waters, about the size of a sports field, reachable solely via fast-moving motorized rafts.

The voyages are undoubtedly scary for the young animals on board, which are loaded alongside canned goods and further materials. The film shows the animals scrambling for better balance as the boats hurtle across the open water.

Voices from the Shoal

The film also follows communities around the more populated Scarborough Shoal, who lament over reduced harvests caused by the persistent presence of foreign fishing vessels in their traditional fishing grounds.

A Compelling Subject, Imperfect Execution

In terms of filmmaking, the documentary suffers a bit from a somewhat scattered narrative approach and a musical score that can feel overly tacky, overplaying the emotional beats. Nevertheless, it stands as a fascinating exploration of a maritime conflict that is rarely covered beyond Asia.
