Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Leader Exits Following Pivot Towards Chicken.
A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while broadening the chain into fried chicken has been replaced after tensions with its directors.
Leadership Change
Andrew Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.
Rennie, who served at the company for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the quickest rising menu item in the world.
Board Friction
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between the CEO and the board over his focus and direction, although the company's release said he was departing “through mutual consent”.
New Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain launched its chicken-focused product line – which Rennie described as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it regards fried chicken as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.
Leadership Statement
Ian Bull, the company chairman, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and profitability in our primary operations. We are prioritizing finding the right chief executive to direct the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a significant fall in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also struggling. Another major chain revealed the closing of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards healthier eating, Domino's has launched reduced-calorie options, such as its thin-crust range of pizzas below 400 calories as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a individual has 909 kcal.
Interim Management
The interim chief has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the gambling company a well-known operator. It is thought that she does not want to occupy the top job permanently.
She said: “Our team has a several ongoing development and operational projects that we will be concentrating on carrying out at pace.”
She said these involved further work on the organization's procurement system and menu innovation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also in need of a full-time CFO until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow acts as acting financial officer.
